Q: How to travel to Denali National Park from Anchorage?
A: There are multiple ways of traveling to Denali National Park from Anchorage. Alaska Railroad operates daily during peak summer months from Anchorage to Denali National Park. It leaves Anchorage at 8:15 AM and arrives at Denali National Park by 3:45 PM. You can also travel to Denali National Park from Anchorage aboard Anchorage Denali Express, a comfortable daily express motorcoach service between Anchorage and Denali National Park. The motor coach leaves Anchorage downtown at 7:30 AM and arrives at the park entrance by 12:30 PM. For those guests who want to connect with the bus going to Denali Backcountry Lodge, deep inside Denali National Park in Kantishna, the motorcoach is an excellent option. If neither motorcoach nor train is your choice, then you can rent a car in Anchorage. Depending on a road condition, it takes in average 4.5 to 5 hours to travel by car from Anchorage to Denali National Park.
Q: Can you provide any insight as to staying in Denali Cabins versus Denali Backcountry Lodge?
A: We own and operate two lodging properties in Denali National Park; Denali Cabins and Denali Backcountry Lodge. Denali Cabins is an affordable lodging option located 8 miles south of the park entrance right at Mile Marker 229, whereas Denali Backcountry Lodge is our exclusive all inclusive lodging choice located at the very end of the restricted Park Road deep inside Denali National Park in the Kantishna region. Q: Can we take the morning bus to the Denali Backcountry Lodge?
A:Yes, however, if you are planning to stay overnight at the Denali Backcountry Lodge, you must take the afternoon bus. It is still the same fully narrated, exciting, wildlife searching adventure, just set a little later in the day. You will arrive at the Denali Backcountry Lodge in the evening, on time for a Family-Style Dinner, and a peaceful night in your private cedar cabin.
The morning bus is reserved for the Denali Backcountry Adventure. It is a full-day adventure and requires an early start, which is why the morning bus is completely reserved. It’s most complete trip to Kantishna, in Denali National park, in just one day.
Q: Is the Denali Backcountry Lodge open year round? Can we take the Denali Backcountry Adventure in December?
A: The entire towns of Denali and Kantishna shut completely down from around September 15- May 15th. The traffic lights even shut off. There is no lodging in or around the Park Entrance during this hiatus. The Denali Park Road goes unmaintained after the first snow, and the wildlife in the park get a well deserved reprieve from human visitors. There are plenty of other activities you can partake in while you are staying in this winter wonderland though. One of the most treasured is seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in Fairbanks. There are also plenty of winter sports to enjoy including snowmachining, dog mushing, and skiing!
Q: How far from Anchorage to Denali Backcountry Lodge? Can we rent a car and drive to the lodge?
A: Anchorage to Denali is 256 Miles and about 5 hours of driving. You can rent a car, but re recommend taking the Motorcoach or Train. Unfortunately you can not drive to the Backcountry Lodge, as there are no personal vehicles allowed in Denali National Park. We do have regular shuttles that take you from the Park Entrance to Denali Backcountry Lodge.
