Q: When is the longest day of the year? How long is it?
A: The longest day of the year is Summer Solstice, and usually falls on the 20th or 21st of June. The length of day depends on whether you’re in Anchorage or Fairbanks. In Anchorage the day is about 19 hours and 22 minutes long. In Fairbanks the day lasts a whopping 21 hours. You should know that for the hours that the sun is not up on those days that it is light enough outside to still carry on most activities, and that you don’t even need your headlights on!
Q: We are visiting this summer from Palm Springs, my children have never seen snow, and I feel it will really complete our ‘Alaskan Experience’. Will we be able to see snow in Denali National Park?
A: Depending on when you visit in the summer months there may be some small patches of snow up higher in altitudes of the park. Mt. McKinley is always capped in snow due to her height, but by June or July most of the snow on the ground is melted. As you travel farther north in Alaska (to Fairbanks or beyond) your chance of finding snow increases in heavily wooded and mountain areas. It all depends on when you plan on visiting. May and August/September have a much higher chance of snow than the middle summer months.
Q: We are planning a trip to Alaska in March. Could you tell me about what the weather is like?
A: Most of Alaska is still in Winter in March. The road to Denali is still closed, and the town is shut-down. Expect colder weather in the 20′s and 30′s Fahrenheit. Id recommended packing with layers of clothing, jeans, teeshirts, sweaters, coats, thick socks, and some boots. Continue reading →
A: The train depot in Denali runs along the Parks Highway. The train does not run deep inside the Preserve, as it would be disruptive to the natural state of the Park. However, the train is a wonderful way to experience the trip to and from Denali. Once you are in Denali you can travel deep into the park with our Denali Backcountry Adventure.
A: The closest major airport to Denali is Anchorage. Denali is almost dead center between Fairbanks and Anchorage, but most flights have to stop in anchorage for re-fueling anyway. You are more than welcome to take a bush plane to Talkeetna from Anchorage or all the way to Denali! Bush Planes are a very common sight in Alaska, and can be very comfortable.
