Do we have to be in a group?

Q: Do we have to be in an actual tour group to stay in Denali National Park?

A:  Absolutely not! You can stay in Denali National Park with or without a group and experience all the wonder that makes up this wonderful state!  Book as a group or an individual, it doesn’t change your status as a guest with us in the park.

Is Denali Backcountry Lodge open year round?

Q: Is the Denali Backcountry Lodge open year round? Can we take the Denali Backcountry Adventure in December?

A: The entire towns of Denali and Kantishna shut completely down from around September 15- May 15th.  The traffic lights even shut off.  There is no lodging in or around the Park Entrance during this hiatus.  The Denali Park Road goes unmaintained after the first snow, and the wildlife in the park get a well deserved reprieve from human visitors.  There are plenty of other activities you can partake in while you are staying in this winter wonderland though.  One of the most treasured is seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in Fairbanks.  There are also plenty of winter sports to enjoy including snowmachining, dog mushing, and skiing!

How late can I book?

Q: About how late can I realistically book for this year? Or thinking early next.

A: In practice, you can try to book the day before you come to Alaska.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t guarantee we will have space available.  The earlier you book the better your chances of getting the cabin and transportation you want.  As far as booking for next year, you can book now!  If you are unsure of specific dates and times you can call us at 1-800-808-8068 and ask us to set up an itinerary for you.  We are local Alaskans and know about the road conditions and construction along all the major Alaskan routes.  We can also advise you on accurate travel times with most modes of transportation.  Hope this helps!

When can I go bear viewing?

Q: Can I view bears in April? When is the best time to go on a tour?

A: Bears in Alaska typically emerge in late April or early May.  As the beginning of April can still be pretty cold, the bears stay nice and cozy until the weather warms up.  The best time to view bears is between May and September when they are most active.

What to pack?

Q: I’m going to be traveling to Alaska this August.  What should I pack for travel to Fairbanks and Anchorage?

A: Alaska in August is a very beautiful time.  The trees may be turning colors, and the days are slightly cooler.  As with all packing for Alaska, we recommend bringing layers of clothing.  The undermost layer being tank tops and long underwear.  Alternatively, you may land in Anchorage and the temperature could be in the 70′s and never lay a drop of rain.  The best advice we can give is that you should pack some jeans, tee-shirts, one pair of shorts, a few light under layers, and a sweater.  When you check the weather before your departure, be sure to look at various parts of the state to get a full view.  Hope this helps!
